Kungfu Fan
Prerequisite: Minimum 2 years practice of the Yang Family Hand Form (specifically Yang Family, taught either by Kelly or any of the instructors of the Seattle Yang Chengfu Tai Chi Center). This is an advanced form and is suitable for those who are able to practice the Hand Form on their own.
Description
Created by Grandmaster Li Deyin in 2001 in support of the Beijing 2008 Olympics, 52 form kungfu fan has become the one of the most popular forms of fan. It incorporates elements of kungfu, taiji, and weapons, and is a display of strength mixed with grace.
The form consists of 52 movements divided into 5 sections with the second section being repeated. We will start by covering sections 1 and 6 (these are slower paced) as one form, and then for those who would like to learn the full form, we will learn the middle four sections that are a bit faster paced. The full form takes 14-18 months to learn.
Sections 1+6 (approx. 6-8 months)
Sections 2-5 (approx. 8-10 months)
Preparation
Please have a fan ready for the first day of class. Kungfu fans may be slightly different from other fans as they’re used in a more vigorous fashion than a regular fan. We recommend the wood and fabric fans that are sold by Kungfu Direct. We don’t get any commissions from any sales. We simply know that they’re the correct type as we use these fans ourselves. There may be other fans equally good out there. Please feel free to pick whatever you’d like as long as it’s sturdy and preferably red if you plan to practice in groups.
We also recommend that those over 6 feet tall buy the 15″ rather than the 13″ so that the fan is in proportion with your body.
